Pastoral support for all!

On this page, we are going to talk about a HUGE aspect of the Supervisor role, which is providing pastoral support. Please remember these pages are just to help you feel more prepared before you head out to start your role. You will receive all of your training when you are there, a part of this training will be volunteer listening and support training.

You’ve been chosen for this role because you have already shown your ability to be able to offer exceptional pastoral support to others. Whilst you are in-country, your main role is to maximise the volunteer experience and with this comes being able to offer pastoral support to volunteers. Here are some things volunteers may need support with:

  • Adjusting to a new culture/climate/environment

  • Feelings of homesickness

  • Going to the doctor if they are physically unwell

  • Planning sessions

  • Debriefing after sessions

  • Reflecting upon alternative treatment methods

We will never expect you have the answers to everything! We can’t solve everything, 95% of this role is just listening and being that approachable figure someone can come too! If you’re ever unsure, you’ll have your epic management team to escalate any issues to as well.

+ Practising Positive Psychology

The best way to provide effective support for others is to ensure you're looking after yourself too! Being in a new environment may mean that your usual self-care routine needs switching up a little, but we're here to help!
