Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: "The five weeks that I spent in Sri Lanka were eye opening, challenging, and rewarding. I greatly enjoyed the hands on experiences working in different settings from orphanages, to day centers, to long term care facilities. I was impressed with how hard everyone worked, particularly in a field that is still highly stigmatized in Sri Lanka."
Tell us what you gained from your SLV.Global Placement: "I gained a newfound knowledge and appreciation of a culture that was previously unfamiliar to me, and a greater appreciation of the resources that we have in the United States for mental health, individuals with disabilities, and early childhood care. Unexpectedly, I also learned that I absolutely loved teaching English. This was the part of my placement that I had been most nervous about. But, to my surprise, I really enjoyed being in the classroom. Nothing compares to the joy on a student’s face when something clicks and you realize that you’ve truly taught them something. My experience in Sri Lanka led me to switch gears and pursue a career teaching English abroad. "
