SLV.Global Placement: Advanced Placement, May 2018

Current Role: "I've continued my work with newcomers as a Projects Coordinator with the Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council and I've continued to volunteer on a crisis hotline with the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre. Plus, I just became an Ambassador with SLV.Global!"

Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: "Volunteering with SLV.Global was one of the best experiences of my life. I learned so much about global mental health, how to effectively fight the stigma surrounding mental health, addictions, and treatment options in developing countries. I was able to work with individuals who are differently-abled, shadow a psychiatrist and a social worker on home visits, and teach English to adorable little kids. The best part? I was able to see the impact my hard work, and the work of SLV.Global as a whole, in supporting local initiatives was having on the Sri Lankan community."

Tell us what you gained from your SLV.Global Placement: "I am studying social work, so everything I learned about global mental health, addictions, stigma reduction, and treatment options in developing countries will be an asset."
