SLV.Global Placement: Advanced Placement, January 2017
Current Role: I am just about to start a summer role with NCS The Challenge
Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: I spent 12 weeks with SLV and since being home have struggled to put the experience into words. I left the UK in January nervous about being away from home for such a long time without knowing anyone. However, within a week of being there my worries had completely vanished and I’d made close friendships that only grew stronger throughout the placement. It’s so hard to put into words because the experience is like no other and unless you are part of SLV you’ll never quite understand how truly amazing it is.
From spending hours preparing for projects, sitting/standing on long bus journeys and exploring the beautiful island, I’ve learned so much from the projects, the people and the culture. I really liked working on a range of projects and felt this was useful to see what my strengths were and what areas of work I enjoyed. I also loved living with our homestay family and being immersed in Sri Lankan culture and food. My main highlight was definitely all the amazing people I got to meet and work with over the 12 weeks. It was inspiring learning from others and motivating each other. I learned the true value of working as a team and can’t thank the people I met enough for making my time in Sri Lanka. I’ll always have the fondest memories of SLV and Sri Lanka as a country.
Tell us what you gained from the placement: My time with SLV has shown me that you can easily make a difference to someone’s life or day by the smallest of things. I appreciate that us volunteers were all very different in our ways of teaching and participating, which worked well in truly impacting on the projects. I will always embrace such uniqueness and differences in others and use this as a strength. I have also gained confidence and a variety of skills that I know will be versatile and adaptable to many different situations as I go on to challenge myself in the future. Most importantly, I have gained a once in a lifetime experience that I will always carry with me.
