SLV.Global Placement: Mental Health Placement, March 2016
Current Role: 'I have been offered a range of jobs, from senior care management to rehabilitation health work. I am currently applying for Clinical and research programmes around the world so fingers crossed!'
Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: 'My time in Sri Lanka teaching English, planning and running lessons for special needs classes, while also organising and taking creative therapies taught me more than I could imagine in just 6-weeks. It was also refreshing to bring my knowledge from my Bachelors into practice in each project I worked on, with the added excitement of the language barrier.'
Tell us what you gained from the placement: 'SLV definitely gave my CV the edge that is so important at this point in time. It put me beyond and above the other recent graduates due to it's first hand experience in a challenging environment. Every interview I go too just wants to know more and more about my unique volunteer work. Not only do you take away invaluable experiences and memories, as well as friends for life, but above all you gain a new sense of confidence in yourself. I know that I can go the length to help a range of people, despite cultural shocks and language barriers. If I can do that, anything is possible from here. It also taught me about my interests within psychology. I most enjoyed working in the mental institutes, though I feel I made the best connections with my special needs classes as I saw them each week. While also teaching English lessons, I could better appreciate my innate connection and drive to work in the clinical field. Whether it's children or adults, with physical or mental barriers, I strive to be like Dr. Jegan, who we shadowed in Killinochi, and look after everyone within reach.'
