SLV.Global Placement: Mental Health Placement January 2015

Current Role: 'Since my placement I have applied for and successfully obtained a job as a health care support worker on a unit specialising in the care and treatment of people with severe or multiple learning difficulties. I have also taken a volunteer role as a civilian assistant with the army cadet force where I assist with the running of a detachment and act as a mentor for young adults with a variety of problems from behavioural to emotional.'

Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: 'Spending 8 weeks living and working in Sri Lanka has taught me more about myself, my limits and my strengths than 3 years of university ever taught me. '

'The things I experienced are hard to put into words, my SLV experience was hot, loud, frustrating, amazing, heart breaking, hilarious and just plain life changing.'

'Before I completed this placement I thought I knew what I wanted in life but when I returned I realised that I had been wrong. I discovered a love of working with people with learning difficulties which I never knew I had. I also found a love of another culture, the warmth and caring nature of my homestay family will stay with me forever and I hope a have brought a little of that warmth back to my own family.'

Tell us what you gained from the placement: 'Having SLV on my CV has enhanced it greatly, it is also a great talking point in interviews!' 'I took away from my placement a new level of confidence and a completely different outlook on life. Things that were important to me no longer are. It has taught me that I should choose a career that I love not one that will make me the most money.'
