Support Worker for Adults with Autism
Education: Psychology - Southampton Solent University, UK
SLV.Global Placement: Mental Health Placement August 2014
Current role: 'Since my placement I have worked with the stroke association and now have a job working as a support worker for adults with autism, before hopefully going to train as a speech and language therapist'
Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: 'I had the most fantastic time on my placement with SLV, it gave me a chance to experience a completely different culture first hand, as well as gain some invaluable experience that would have been hard to do in the UK. It really helped me develop my confidence and do things that I previously thought I would struggle with, such as planning and teaching an entire lesson. Whilst out there we also had the chance to experience some amazing trips, my favourite being shadowing a psychiatrist for a day which completely opened my eyes to how different the health system is out there.'
Tell us what you gained from the placement: 'SLV really helped enhance my CV as it gave me some invaluable experience working with people with both mental health issues and special needs that I would have found it hard to get in the UK. The fact that not all people over there spoke English really helped my communication skills, something incredibly important for my future career path.'
'The mentality of the people in Sri Lanka is something I will never forget, and the respect that we were shown whilst on placement still amazes me. This has really helped change the way I act in certain situations, and to some extent changed the way I view things. The knowledge from the different workshops we attended, particularly for drama therapy, has been incredibly useful as this is something currently being explored in my new job.'
