Volunteer at a Mental Health Hospital
Education: BSc Psychology - University of Glasgow, UK
SLV.Global Placement: Advanced Placement June 2014
Current Role: 'I now volunteer at a mental health hospital, Gartnavel Royal Hospital in Glasgow, which cares for patients with a wide variety of needs. I aid with day to day projects, and I feel my SLV.Global experience really helped prepare me for this.'
Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: 'My experience was great; I broke my wrist on the first day, but Ellie was so helpful and the volunteers in the homestay were so supportive. I enjoyed all aspects of the placement, including the teaching projects, but I especially enjoyed the special needs projects. It was a hectic few weeks, but I met so many amazing people and learned so much about both myself and my field!'
Tell us what you gained from your placement: 'Many Psychology graduates have volunteering experience in their home countries, but very few can say they travelled across the world to aid patients in a third world country. Employers have definitely taken note of this and have been impressed by it.'
'The biggest thing I took away is a life lesson about my own strength; Lee told me during the first couple of days, 'You can't control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to it'. That really stuck with me, and allowed me to overcome personal challenges and really focus on helping clients who needed our support. This is a skill I still put to use during volunteering and working now.'
