SLV.Global Placement: Mental Health Placement June 2014
Current Role: 'Since my placement I initially worked in a paid role for a charity setting up a community cafe project to reduce loneliness and social isolation for people with mental health problems in North Yorkshire. Then in February this year I got offered my first Occupational Therapist job in complex care mental health for a private health care company, I have been working in this job since then, and funnily enough one of the girls on my small team at work I had met through SLV, started the same day as me, she was on my same placement in Sri Lanka, and we were unaware we would end up working together'
Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: 'I completed the 5 week mental health placement just after completing my degree, I opted for this placement rather than the OT placement as my interests have always been in mental health and it was a field I wanted to gain further experience in. The placement was challenging at times, but on reflection that made it all the more worthwhile and a richer learning experience!'
Tell us what you gained from the placement: 'It demonstrated that I was proactive in my efforts to learn and gain experience, both in mental health and in terms of cultural appreciation!'
'I gained and learnt many things including: Cultural Awareness, Developed Skills, Increased Employability, Alternative Communication Methods, Experience of applying OT principles in a different context, Met inspirational characters, made friendships and networks Resourcefulness & Resilience combats adversity.'
