SLV.Global Placement: Mental Health Placement May 2014

Current Role: 'I completed my undergraduate degree and was offered a graduate position on the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) as a Children and Families Social Worker.'

Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: 'My time in Sri Lanka was an eye-opening experience that allowed me to understand Mental Health within a different culture. I was privileged to be given the opportunity to work alongside individuals with complex needs and understand the diversity amongst culture and religion. Aside from that, I was also welcomed into a family who supported me to fully adapt into Sri Lanka. This experience provided me with an insight into a different lifestyle and it was a pleasure to work with SLV, who deliver fantastic outreach services to individuals.'

Tell us what you gained from the placement: 'Within my application for the graduate role and during the interview, I discussed my experience with SLV. I was able to explain my understanding of diversity, my commitment to developing my knowledge and skills, and my ability to adapt to an unfamiliar setting.'

'I now feel I am more aware of ensuring thoughts, feelings and needs are ascertained from the individuals that I support, regardless of their ability to communicate verbally. This was evident during my interactions with individuals where I needed to develop my skills in non-verbal communication. Additionally, I developed a more sound understanding of how individuals' values are shaped by religion and culture and my experience in Sri Lanka has taught me to be mindful of this when assessing an individual within their environment.'
