SLV.Global Placement: Mental Health Placement, September 2013

Current Role: ‘Since returning from Sri Lanka, I have worked as a Mental Health Support Worker in a secure psychiatric ward. I currently work for a mental health charity, in conjunction with the NHS, as part of a multidisciplinary team project, which provides an alternative to A&E for adults with (or developing) mental health problems in crisis. I also work part time in the SLV office interviewing volunteers for future teams, so I haven’t gone too far! This work keeps me connected to my time in Sri Lanka and I even work with one of my old teammates!’

Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: ‘Sri Lanka really is a beautiful country and the experiences that I have gained through SLV will be ones that I will keep with me for life. We spent 12 weeks immersing ourselves in the culture and working with individuals who enriched every aspect of my time in Sri Lanka. This placement was not only incredibly rewarding, challenging and often surprising, but has meant that I have formed friendships that will last for life.’

Tell us what you gained from your placement: ‘My SLV placement has definitely enhanced my CV. I have found that the ability to talk about my experiences with this level of understanding, regarding the cultural impact on mental health and overcoming language barriers, has set me apart from a lot of candidates for jobs.’

‘Volunteering with SLV has provided me with the unique opportunity to better understand Mental Health in a culture very different to my own, as well as the chance to actively engage with vulnerable members of the community, which has informed and developed my skills as a practitioner. It confirmed that I wanted to work within the field of mental health, and has given me a more flexible and adaptable approach to my work.’
