SLV.Global Placement: Mental Health Placement, March 2016

Current Role: ‘Since coming back from Sri Lanka, I have been offered a full time Assistant Psychologist position at a Medium Secure Hospital that specialises in Aquired Brain Injuries.’

Tell us about your SLV.Global experience: ‘I had the best time of my life during my four weeks with SLV! From learning about the culture to living with a local family to being privileged enough to work within the mental health field in Sri Lanka, I really could not have gained a more life changing experience! I worked in a mental health setting in England for around one year before Sri Lanka so it was really eye opening to see things from a different cultural perspective. I enjoyed the extra workshops that SLV ran for the volunteers, particularly the meditation and dance and movement workshop!’

Tell us what you gained from the placement: ‘The experience I gained in Sri Lanka really made my CV stand out from the ever growing number of Psychology students. Being able to discuss mental health from a different perspective during my job interview really gave me the edge. I feel like the experience I gained with SLV really made a difference when it came to my job application!’

‘The mental health placement taught me so many skills that I still use now in my work every day. I found that having to work with a language barrier did wonders for improving my verbal and non verbal communication skills! I also found that I gained a deeper understand of how different social situations can have a massive impact on mental health. I feel like I have come away from the placement a more understanding and well rounded healthcare worker and I definitely owe that to SLV!’
