Fundraising for Your Placement Abroad

"Money makes the world go round" but, if you're a student or a recent graduate, money can be an elusive thing.

We respect your money and we get that it's tough out there, so we advise you get fundraising! 80% of SLV.Global volunteers successfully fundraise for their placements, and we're always blown away by the creative ways they go about raising the funds. You can find some helpful tips on our Fundraisers' Hall of Fame, and here are some words of wisdom from us, too:

1. Set up a page! It's free (except for those sneaky admin fees) and it's easy! We recommend, and These pages are a great way to reach out to friends and family and let them know what you're doing so they can support you.

2. Get active! Run a race, bake some cakes, host a quiz at the local pub. Whatever event you decide to host or participate in, make sure you publicise it well and get lots of people along to support you. Who can say "no" to your lovely, sweaty face after you've just done a half-marathon or your flour-caked hands after you've baked 100 cookies? Get those sympathy pennies!

3. Don't be afraid to ask! A colleague once told me that "if you don't ask, you don't get!" Simple, but wise advice. I know it can feel a bit cringe asking people for cash, but people are surprisingly generous. I asked everyone at work to give me £2 and left a bucket on a table. By the end of the day I'd made a quarter of my final goal. Ask, my friends, ask away!

4. Get that free money! There are grants and bursaries up for grabs all over the world. Search the web for less obvious ways to get financial assistance and always ask your educational institution, you might find that they offer Travel Grants for degree-relevant opportunities abroad. That's us!
