“I am honoured to be taking on the role of being an SLV.Global Ambassador this semester and beyond, as I am very excited to share the details of my experience on my graduate mental health placement that lasted 3 months in Sri Lanka, that started in January of 2018! I can't wait to spread the word about how awesome an organisation SLV.Global truly is, and to emphasise that their volunteer placements are extremely eye opening, and help you to develop greater teamwork, creativity, communication, and cultural awareness skills within a completely different country.
My time in Sri Lanka on the graduate mental health placement was an incredibly worthwhile experience. The opportunity to immerse yourself in a culture while living in a homestay was something I will never forget, as you truly adopt many aspects of the Sri Lankan lifestyle. The projects of the placement including mental health initiatives and teaching English projects were so rewarding, and I have gained so much cultural insight, and psychological knowledge as a result! You receive a good amount of training and workshops throughout, and learn from some amazing mentors along the way. Also, you plan and run all of your own sessions which is so cool!
Facing the realities of people who face mental health problems in Sri Lanka greatly impacted my past perceptions. It opened me up to new world perspectives, and created a greater sense of purpose in all the psychology related work I do now, whether it be abroad or at home, because I truly know how much it matters. At SLV.Global, you work in a positive environment with motivated and inspirational people, which is another reason why I can't rave about the programs they offer enough!
I honestly met some of the coolest, most like minded people on placement! Also, you get to travel around the beautiful country every weekend!
I am looking forward to rejoining the SLV.Global team in this regard as an ambassador, and hopefully on another future placement one day.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have, I'd be happy to help!”
