"I'm a Fourth Year Psychology student at McMaster University. I was on the Foundation Placement in Sri Lanka - and in my five weeks there I was able to work with a wide range of service users; ranging from children to elders, and individuals with mental illnesses like depression, schizophrenia, autism, down syndrome etc. It was amazing to have such an extensive exposure to different populations because no one day or project was ever the same. It made the experience all the more worthwhile and enriching knowing that, not only were these service users learning from us during our positive mental health activities, but we were also learning from them. I've learned to be more appreciative of the little things in life and of other people. I've learned to have a form of empathy no other experience could've helped cultivate. I've learned to be more present with those closest to me in any given moment. And all in all, I've learned to be a well-rounded, compassionate, and authentically loving human being - all thanks to the opportunity that SLV.Global was gracious enough to let me be a part of. Because of my experience, I was eager to spread the word about my placement and the distinct warmth of the Sri Lankan people to absolutely anyone interested in something like this. So here I am, a new ambassador eager to share my experience with you all. If you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to chat!"
